Description

This Southern Banana Cobbler recipe creates a nostalgic, comforting dessert featuring sweet, ripe bananas folded into a warmly spiced batter. Enhanced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, the cobbler bakes up golden and tender with a subtle cake-like crust. Best enjoyed warm, it pairs perfectly with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, making it an ideal treat for gatherings or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Optional: chopped nuts
  • Optional: chocolate chips
  • Optional: extra spices
  • Garnishes: whipped cream
  • Garnishes: fresh mint leaves
  • Garnishes: vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mash 4 ripe bananas in a large bowl until mostly smooth.
  3. Add sugar, melted butter, and vanilla extract to bananas, whisk to combine.
  4. In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to banana mixture, alternating with milk.
  6. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  7. Pour batter into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spreading evenly.
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Garnish with whipped cream, ice cream, or mint leaves as desired.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use plant-based butter and non-dairy milk. Chopped nuts or chocolate chips can be added for texture. Prepare cobbler a day ahead and reheat gently before serving. Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to three days. If bananas are too ripe, the cobbler may turn out mushy; aim for firm-ripe bananas. If the top browns too quickly, tent with foil during baking. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.
