With soft, buttery swirls of pink and blue and a hint of nostalgic cotton candy flavor, they’re almost too pretty to eat. Easy to make and completely customizable, they’re a guaranteed hit with kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk (or substitute with 1/4 cup milk + 1 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pink and blue gel food coloring
  • Cotton candy flavoring (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  • Add the egg, vanilla extract, and buttermilk to the butter mixture. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  • Divide the dough evenly into two bowls. Add pink gel food coloring to one and blue to the other. Mix until the colors are evenly distributed.
  • Take a small portion of pink dough and a small portion of blue dough, roll them together into a ball, and swirl the colors lightly. Place on the prepared baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between each cookie.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just golden.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • For brighter colors, use gel food coloring instead of liquid.
  • Cotton candy flavoring adds a nostalgic touch but is optional.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
