Ingredients

Scale

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Topping:

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

For the Boiling Water:

  • 1 1/2 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, and cocoa powder. Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and brown sugar for the topping. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter.
  4. Slowly pour the hot water over the top. Do not stir!
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is set and slightly cracked. The bottom layer will remain gooey.
  6. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate indulgence.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
  • This recipe is best served warm, but leftovers can be reheated in the microwave for 20-30 seconds.
  • If you prefer a less sweet dessert, reduce the amount of granulated sugar in the batter or topping by 2-3 tablespoons.
  • Experiment with toppings like chopped nuts, mini marshmallows, or a drizzle of caramel for extra flair!
