How to Make Air Fryer Onion Rings

Air Fryer Onion Rings

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Description

Air Fryer Onion Rings are a crispy, golden snack or side dish made with thick onion slices coated in a seasoned breadcrumb mixture, then air fried to perfection. This recipe delivers all the crunch of traditional fried onion rings with less oil, making them a healthier alternative. The rings are easy to prepare, require minimal ingredients, and yield satisfyingly delicious results every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, cut into 1/2-inch rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 minutes.
  2. Separate onion slices into rings and set aside.
  3. In one bowl, mix flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. In a second bowl, whisk eggs and buttermilk together.
  5. Place panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  6. Dip each onion ring first in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs.
  7. Arrange coated rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket (work in batches if needed).
  8. Spray the rings lightly with nonstick spray.
  9. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
  10. Repeat with remaining onion rings. Serve warm.

Notes

For gluten-free onion rings, use gluten-free flour and panko. Substitute regular milk with buttermilk if you prefer a lighter taste. Make ahead by breading the onion rings and storing in the fridge for up to 24 hours before air frying. Store cooked rings in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days; re-crisp in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes. If panko falls off, make sure to press the breading firmly. Avoid overcrowding to ensure crispiness.
